How we handle question papers, answer scripts, marks and the personal data of candidates, examiners and exam staff.
Our role
For examination data, the institution that conducts the exam (the university, board, college or exam body) decides why and how data is processed. We process that data only on the institution's documented instructions, as a processor under the Digital Personal Data Protection Act, 2023 and other applicable law.
Data we process for institutions
- Candidate details supplied by the institution: roll number, name, course, centre and internal assessment marks.
- Scanned answer booklets, including supplementary sheets.
- Question papers, model answers and marking schemes.
- Marks, annotations, moderation outcomes, revaluation requests and results.
- Examiner and staff details: name, institutional email, appointment details, device and login records.
Data we collect on this website
When you sign up or write to the exam cell, we collect the details you enter, such as your name, work email, institution, role and message. We use this only to create your account, reply to you and provide the service you asked for.
Anonymised evaluation
Roll numbers and names are separated from answer pages at scanning and replaced by a random evaluation code. Examiners and moderators see only that code. The key that links codes back to candidates is held by the institution's controller of examinations.
Candidates who are minors
School boards may submit data of candidates under 18. This data is used only for assessment and the publication of results. It is never used for advertising, profiling or behavioural tracking, and consent obligations for such data rest with the institution as data fiduciary.
Use of artificial intelligence
- The AI Marking Assistant highlights key points, flags unviewed pages and adds up totals. It never awards marks.
- Answer scripts of one institution are not used to train models used by any other institution.
- Every AI suggestion and every examiner action is logged for audit and revaluation.
Security
Question papers and scripts are encrypted in transit and at rest. Access is role-based, sessions are device-bound for examiners, and every view, edit, download and print is recorded in an access log that cannot be edited.
Retention
Scripts and marks are retained for the period set by the institution, by default three years after result declaration, to support revaluation, court and RTI requirements. After that they are deleted or returned to the institution.
Sharing
We do not sell personal data. We share data only with sub-processors needed to run the service, such as cloud hosting and email delivery, under written agreements, or when required by law.
Your rights
Candidates should direct requests about their marks or personal data to the institution that conducted their exam. Website visitors can ask to access, correct or delete the details they submitted by writing to us through the Exam Cell page.
